Dr John Lawrenson - Head of Paediatric Cardiology at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, and affiliated to Stellenbosch University.

Dr Lawrenson is responsible for the recruitment and follow-up of patients for Operation BraveHeart. The Paediatric Cardiology Service of the Western Cape is a cross-platform unit that serves patients at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.  They offer consultative services and in-patient care at both sites; children undergo cardiac catheterisation at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Dr Lawrenson also sees newborn patients suspected of having heart disease in the neonatal services and he and his team assist in the surgical and critical care of patients who have undergone cardiac surgery. Recently cardiology has established an outreach programme from Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in order to reach communities and bring specialist and follow-up health services closer to them. Much of Operation BraveHeart’s research is applied hands on engagement with children and parents in wards, surgical theatres and communities and Dr Lawrenson is responsible for co-ordinating these research activities and the patients’ clinical details in publication.
